Our guests have the whole of The Barn to themselves, with breakfasts served at table. With your own keys and dedicated parking, you can come and go as you please. The Barn is big, with exposed beams and a high and exposed cathedral canopy. The oak floor has exotic Eastern rugs – although the well-equipped kitchen and luxury shower room have modern tiling. Furniture is principally high-quality antiques. And, of course, there’s television and audio, including DAB radio. The one-third-acre of quiet gardens, with their iconic pavilion (and even a small pond), are yours to enjoy.
The historic barn is full of character, offering our guests a beautiful open plan style accommodation, comprising of:
Bedroom area
The super-king size bed has a high-quality (Vi-Spring) individual pocketed spring mattress, with extra comforters, but can be reconfigured as two separated single beds. With a tall antique (housekeepers’) cupboard – housing the television and “HiFi” audio equipment – and thick tapestry curtaining, the bedroom is separable from the rest of the barn in a trice.
An additional roll-out bed is available for a third person. Additionally, we can often help with special needs for infants. Although there are necessary restrictions, the mezzanine “self-contained” upper floor, above the kitchen and shower-room, can be used by responsible but “adventure-eager” young persons. Please talk to us about this if you are bringing juniors with you.
Sitting / Dining area
Central and compact, the dining table seats four in comfort. A fine oak antique dresser, with “secret” fastenings, is typical of the intriguing features of The Barn.
For exceptional cold times, there is a mock “wood burning stove” ready to provide even further warmth. This is a good spot for conversations and table-top games, and for reading, perhaps from the small library, and for relaxation.
Your breakfast will be served here – unless guests choose to eat outdoor on the adjacent private terrace.
Kitchen area
Step into the modern kitchen area, where functionality meets style, offering ample work surfaces to unleash your culinary creativity. Equipped with a range of tea and coffee essentials, you can start your day with a refreshing brew or unwind with a warm drink in the cosy barn. The refrigerator ensures your favourite ingredients stay fresh, while the microwave oven provides convenience for quick snacks or meals.
This thoughtfully designed space invites you to enjoy a seamless blend of comfort and practicality, making it the perfect setting for delicious home-cooked meals or leisurely breakfasts.
The Shower Room
The shower-room in the barn, with its heated tiled floor and electric towel rail, was made for personal indulgence. The glass-walled shower is over-sized, the wall mirror is big enough for the most luxurious dress to be seen full length and the illuminated shaving mirror has a convex face for close-up examinations.
But, discretely there – if you need them – are fold-up support bars and grab handles. Of course, there will be an adequacy of towels and soaps for your visit.
Gardens and Terrace
Visitors and guests are invited to use the gardens, including the pavilion – created by the rescue of pillars from an historic City of London building, long ago demolished. There are a central table and chairs for six here. The free WiFi and electric supply make it a delightful place on a summer’s day or evening to eat, drink, work or relax.
Just around the corner from the south-side stable door, is a discrete brick-paved “own terrace”, with seating and a table for up to six people – a good place for “al fresco” meals, especially breakfast. Irrespective, guests may “bring their own” or have a “take-away” from one of the many shops and stores within a few miles.

A little bit of history …
Pilgrims Barn has been featured in renowned publications including “Period Home” and “Essex Life”.
The barn is ancient, although its history is unclear. When the present hosts (John and Sally Lowe) arrived, it had only just ended its use as a chicken shed. What is now the kitchen and the shower room were a sectioned-off store for fuel and smallholding detritus.
With Pilgrims, the house, it now is Grade II listed and protected. There is a three-part album of pictures in the “library” in the dining space area.
